About Us
Finding Inspiration in Everybody we meet
Shinsei was formed in 2007 by Sensei John Bell (4th Dan). John initially trained in Shotokan Karate and later in Muay Thai Kick Boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). The syllabus at the academy is based around the etiquette of Shotokan, with regular gradings so a student can see progress in their training. There are the usual punches & kicks but the syllabus goes far more in to depth than that! We utilize Thai Boxing style gloves and pads for the striking and kicking part of the classes, and we use Tatami Judo mats for the 'ground' work or grappling/jiu jitsu side. Most fights end up on the floor, so its essential to know your 'stand up' and your 'ground work'. We also teach 'awareness' and how to avoid conflict, and how to read situations that may lead to an attack by others. If it can be avoided - then avoid it!
There are set lesson totals that a student much reach in order to grade, they must also understand their syllabus and be able to perform it at the grading. We welcome parents and spectators at our gradings too, so they can witness a students progression. We are also available at the dojo (training hall) should you need to talk to us.
The hardest thing to do is walk through the front doors. Nobody will make you do anything that you cannot do. You simply learn at your own pace.
Our Story
It's simple, we started in 2007 at St Columba's and have gone from strength to strength. We are a small family run club and have trained many students from starting as beginners through to achieving their black belt. Bringing out the confidence and ability in normal, every day people. Its surprising how a person evolves when learning a martial art, but seeing them flourish is what we like seeing the most. We accept anyone, from any race, religion or background. We have taught students with autism and other conditions.
"Everybody deserves the right to defend themselves and their families, and not to be intimidated by others" - Sensei John Bell.
All of our instructors are DBS (enhanced) certified and first aid trained. We are fully insured.
